5 Mile Ale - Touring Mercury Brewing Company

A short distance from downtown Ipswich, you can find Mercury Brewing Company. They are most known for their funky soda pop, and of course, Ipswich Ale.  We met with Jim Dorau, the Operations Manager at the brewery.  Walking around the brewery, it is clear that the company has out-grown their small space in one of Ipswich's industrial parks.  Rob Martin, President of Ipswich Ale Brewing, started off as an employee of the brewery, until 1999 when he bought the company.  14 years later, the brewery has grown so large that in a few months they will move to a new location.

Taking the Backroads

Green Meadows Farm is a certified organic farm founded by Major General George Patton in 1982. They raise vegetables, fruits and heritage breeds of livestock in South Hamilton, Massachusetts for their CSA and Farmstand.

The parking lot was full despite it being the third day of a four day heat wave.  We browsed and put together a start kit of plantings for our first container garden which included Brandywine Tomatoes, Basil, Lemon Balm, Jalapeno and Anaheim Peppers.  We also couldn't resist grabbing a bunch of organic grapes while on our way to the register.

The Chilly Cow ice cream truck was on site dishing out generous samples of peanut butter and chocolate ice cream pie.  Made in nearby in Arlington, Massachusetts, Chilly Cow features over 100 flavors of super premium ice cream, frozen custard, frozen yogurt, sherbets and sorbets that can be found in renown restaurants, local and national stores and other retail establishments throughout New England.
